Destiny which there is no evading
We regret to report that another deep shadow has been cast over [Borve] by the sad intelligence received by Mrs John Maciver (Black) RNR on 19th October that her devoted husband has drowned. Ian was engaged as a gunner on board the ill-fated vessel "Main", bound from Wales to Ireland when she was torpedoed by a German submarine near the Irish coast with the result that all on board perished, except for the captain who was saved.
Only a week ago, his widow received word from him that he hoped he would be "the next letter himself" as he was expected hom on leave immediately he arrived in Ireland on that voyage. Ian was a fine specimen of a sailor as well as a true Highlander and in that capacity implicit confidence was placed in him by the Admiralty. His noble disposition and sound principles won for him the high esteem and opinion of all who knew him. To his widow and other relatives the deepest sympathy is extended in their own bereavement.
