Tributes for the War Memorial

This site contains transcripts of tributes to men from Lewis and Harris who lost their life in the First World War, first published by the Stornoway Gazette in 1917 and 1918. The Gazette's first issue came out on 5 January 1917. Further personal and military details for each casualty can be found on the Faces from the Lewis War Memorial website and Harris War Memorial.

The Lewis tributes are arranged by island district. The six Harris tributes are grouped on this page.

John Morrison, Beckrivig

Pte John Morrison, Australians, who was killed in action in France, was a son of Mr and Mrs Donald Morrison, Beckrivig, Harris. He went to Australia in the spring of 1905 and, like so many gallant Highlanders, answered his country's call at an early stage of the war. Much sympathy is extended to his parents / sisters and brothers in their sore bereavement.

Donald Macleod, Meavaig

Pte Donald Macleod, Cameron Highlanders, Meavaig, has been killed in action. He was employed by Messrs Mackenzie & Sons in Stornoway and latterly was manager with Messrs Ferguson & Gillies, South Uist. He was only 3 weeks in France when he was killed. Much sympathy is extended to his bereaved sister, who has lost her only brother.

Murdo Morrison, Amhuinnsuidhe

Sgt Murdo Morrison RSF was killed in action in France on 8 April 1917. He was the son of Mr Donald Morrison, blacksmith, Amhuinnsuidhe. In civil life he was a gardener and worked for a number of years in Kilmarnock. On outbreak of war, he enlisted in the RSF and had been in France for the past two years. His parents have the sympathy of the community.

Duncan Mackinnon, Tarbert

Pte Duncan Mackinnon, Camerons, son of Mr D. Mackinnon, joiner, West Tarbert, who has been in France since June 1916 was severely wounded in the knee on 14 April 1917 and died shortly afterwards. Mackinnon was only 20 years of age. He has another brother in the RAMC who is presently in France.
